Nexium (Esomeprazole) is used to treat ulcers of the gastric mucosa and duodenum. It is effective in preventing the formation of peptic ulcers during concomitant therapy with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs Clinical studies have shown that Nexium helps to increase gastrin and decrease production of hydrochloric acid.

Side effects

  • Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: drowsiness, depression, paresthesia, aggression, insomnia, irritability, dizziness, hallucinations;
  • gastrointestinal tract: candidiasis, stomatitis;
  • blood system and hematopoiesis: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis;
  • liver: Hepatitis, encephalopathy, hepatic failure;
  • musculoskeletal system: muscle weakness, pain in joints;
  • skin: photosensitivity, rash, toxic epidermal necrolysis, alopecia;
  • others: hypersensitivity reactions (bronchospasm, fever, nephritis, increased sweating), edema, hyponatremia, and changes in taste.

If you are over 60 years of age, the likelihood of side effects is very high. You may need a lower dose.

Precautions

Nexium is contraindicated for patients with:

  1. hypersensitivity to the drug and its components;
  2. hereditary fructose intolerance;
  3. glucose-galactose malabsorption;
  4. severe renal failure.

The drug enters breast milk. Taking the drug during breast feeding is not recommended, as safety of use in this case is not validated.

For patients with kidney failure and osteoporosis the medicine should be prescribed with caution.

How to take

The medicine is taken orally with a full glass of water, regardless of the meal.

Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis:

The recommended dosage is 40 mg 1 time a day for 4 weeks.

Long-term maintenance treatment after healing of erosive reflux esophagitis:

The recommended dosage is 20 mg 1 time per day.

Applied dose for patients with severe hepatic insufficiency should not exceed 20 mg / day.

Drug interactions

Nexium do not cause clinically significant changes in the pharmacokinetics of amoxicillin and quinidine.

Applying Esomeprazole and Tacrolimus increase Tacrolimus concentrations in blood serum.

Naxium and proton pump inhibitors increase concentration of methotrexate.

Missed dose

Take the capsule as soon as you remember. However, dont take the double dose and continue the prescribed dosage.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, vomiting, weakness and diarrhea.

It is necessary to carry out common activities aimed at the maintenance of respiratory function and cardiovascular system.

In case of severe overdose, contact emergency services immediately (USA/UK – 911 / 112 / 999).

Storage
